Review: Ping G30 Ls Tec Driver

People frequently inquire about the clubs that you are currently playing as a product reviewer when you aren’t reviewing any new cars. This doesn’t usually happen but it does occur. I would say the race it tighter than ever this year, but after testing most of the new drivers, it looks like the Ping G30 LS is going to win the “Gamer 2015” title.

Because of the amount of practice I have been able add to my calendar, my game has improved significantly over these 15 months. High school coaching has enabled me to be on the golf course nearly every day. My game is not as good as it used to be. I have no high handicap and don’t need any game improvement club. However, the less difficult and forgiving drivers I play, the more I enjoy my game. G30, also known as “Forgivenator”, was released in 2014. If you found the face at all, there was a good chance your drive would turn out OK; plus the turbulators offered high clubhead speeds. The spin was low, but maybe not quite low enough, thus the creation of the LS Tec (Low Spin). It decreases spin by around 400 RPMs. This adds yards to the carry, and more to the rollout without requiring forgiveness.

I went with the Tour 65 stiff shaft for this driver and it really worked out perfectly. TFC419D High Balance stiff, Tour 80 stiff in the G30. So I tried the Tour 65 shaft. For me it is the most balanced. In the G30 LS Tec driver the Tour 80 remains my favorite shaft, however the Tour 65 gives me a greater feel. The Tour 65 has a lighter weight and provides a more balanced combination of power for my swing. With the 45’’ stock shaft length and a neutral setting, the 9* head came out at D3.

Because we had an early spring here, it meant that I was able get the ball on the ground in MN in March. It then went to Quivira Golf Club at Cabo San Lucas MX. At first I was a little concerned because it seemed like the launch angle went down from the G30 to the G30 LS. The bullets were initially low. The bullets were short and straight but did not offer the same amount of carry that I was looking for. Once I took my swing back everything worked out as planned. Launch angle rose, carry went further, and the roll out was tremendous. In dry Quivira conditions I managed to get multiple drives out of the garage, one driving over 350 (downhill assisted).

The driver’s feel is great. You can feel the G series hollowness in this driver, giving it that extra pop on impact. The pitch is a little louder and tinnier than the normal G30, but impact sensation is like an explosion off the face. The launch height is slightly lower than for the G30.

Launch Angle: 13.9*

I’d say 100% that I disliked the sound of the driver. I didn’t go with the ping g30 because most of my misses are heel hits and I snapped the demo club I tested…

The LS tech may encourage me again to take a look at one.

D4 is an anomaly. D4 spins faster than D3, and is therefore larger. Are you interested in this product?
