Ping G30 3 Wood Review

Introduction

According to a review I did, the PING G30 was the best all-around player in golf. Billy Horschel recently used one to win the Tour Championship. Ex Cup. Bubba Watson uses one to be the PGA Tour’s driving distance leader.

With all this buzz around the driver, it would be easy to forget about the fairway wood, but in the case of the G30, that would be a mistake. PING took a club already well-known and improved it.

Ping G30 Fairway Woods Review

In fairway woods, where PING seemed to have been relatively quiet, it is a place that has always caught the attention of many. The G30 line illustrates a change within the G-series that seeks to provide the distance and playability to make them a relevant contender within the market for a variety of golfers, not just those seeking maximum forgiveness.

G30 fairwaywoods were created to be a more accommodating face that generates distance and control. A strong, uniform-thickness Carpenter 475 face maximizes deflection to increase ball speed and generate distance. The face is also taller for additional face bending and forgiveness. Crown turbulators help with aim and confidence. With five settings you can change the amount of loft that is available to improve your trajectories.

Unique feeling of power in the face

Turbulators didn’t seem as effective for distance as on driver.

RRP PS210.00

G30 woods preserve the driver’s Turbulator drag thwarting crown through a hotter head. This was without sacrificing speed or consistency. Ping developed a hotter face from stronger steel. This allowed him to produce a thin and uniform-thick face, which maximizes deflection upon impact. A new center of gravity was created – the weight moves up as lofts rise to ensure that the spin characteristics and launch angle are optimised for maximum control and distance in every clubhead. To adjust launch and spin, there are up to five loft settings – you can choose from two levels of adjustment.

We caught up with Ping’s chief club designer Marty Jertson to find out more about the fairway wood design – watch the video here As reviewed in our 2014 Fairway Woods Test : The shape is nice, mid face depth. For game players, the distance from heel and toe is ideal. Turbulators are a nice addition to the game, although they can be more impactful on drivers. But they did not seem to affect club speed. Turbulators aid in positioning the ball centrely. However, they didn’t help me increase club speed nearly as much as I did with the driver. It felt really stable, like the strike point didn’t matter. Further versatility can be added by the adjustment. The shots felt great off the face. So powerful and very forgiving on poor strikes.
