There are at the very least several dozen highly-smart, affordable robots which can easily learn the layout and clean any room or section of it on demand. The system can be used by anyone who is comfortable with using a smartphone to manipulate maps.
Numerous of the laser-navigation systems have almost identical specs, designs, or behaviors. There is no way to know which one is better, more durable, or more reliable than any other. We recommend the Roborock S4 Max, which is often the lowest-priced model of its kind (it can often be found in the middle of $3000-$300), as it offers the most advanced app and has the best set of controls. Roborocks, and others like them, aren’t likely to last as long. Their single-brush designs also make it difficult to clean rugs. If you are apprehensive about the idea of using an app to control a robot, the Roomba i3 might be a better option. This robot is stronger and cleans more efficiently.

This reliable robot vacuum cleaner is more durable than comparable bots made by other manufacturers and it is also better at cleaning rugs. The robot vacuum is very agile and will not get stuck. However, it can clean only a small number of rooms at once.

The robot vacuum we tested is more quiet and can fit under furniture better than other models. While it works best in small spaces, it rarely gets stuck and does a good job on bare floors and short-pile rugs. Though it has a longer life span than the Roomba 694.

Semi-random navigation is a common feature on lower priced robots. These robots are known as bump-and-run or “bump and run” bots. While it’s perfectly acceptable to clean 3-4 rooms per hour (or more if your patient), the ineptness and lack of organization can be irritating for some. Up until Fall 2021, we actually suggested the semi-random approach for most people. But it was clear to us from reading user reviews that this has been replaced by the current zeitgeist. Now that prices have dropped, most would-be robot owners expect their robot to look like it knows what it’s doing, instead of cruising around randomly, bumping into stuff. We still believe bump-and run bots are a viable option, so we have moved our favorite robots to budget-pick status.
Roomba 600 Series is the first model we recommend. This robot is much more robust than other bump-and–run models, and we think it’s worth the slight increase in price. A dual-brush system and dirt-detection technology make the Roomba 600 series a more powerful cleaner than similar low-end brands. This is especially true for rugs. Roomba 694 (the most recent model) has Wi–Fi. However, sometimes you may be able to purchase a cheaper model without Wi–Fi. You can get them for $250 or less, and $200 is great.
The Eufy RoboVac 11S is another option. It’s quiet and agile, and blends in with the background better than any other robot, except for the dozen or so Eufy clones. Although it sounds like a simple robot, even though it runs, the sound is more similar to a desk fan. It is also shorter than average bots. This allows it to slide underneath furniture better and scoops up lots of dirt. However, unlike other robots like the 11S, it doesn’t have the same durability as others. There are also many instances of non-repairable problems that occur much sooner than that. And while the 11S will get your floors much cleaner than if you didn’t vacuum at all, this bot just isn’t built to dig up much debris from rugs, especially softer, thicker types. The 11S works well in small spaces, just like other Roomba 600 models (and many others in the same price range).

Roborock S4 Max Supersmart bot, great price This is one of the most affordable robots smart enough to memorize a home’s layout (even a large one) and then quickly and gracefully clean specific rooms or zones on command via smartphone app. Unfortunately, the robot isn’t as good at cleaning rugs as a Roomba. Therefore it may be slower and less reliable.

Reliable, repairable, and good on rugs
This proven robot vacuum can clean rugs much better than any other brand. While it’s an agile navigator and rarely becomes stuck, this robot vacuum does best when cleaning a handful of rooms at a while.

A quiet, agile, and budget-friendly
This robot vacuum, which is affordable and easily fits under most furniture we’ve tried, is much quieter. Although it’s best suited for small areas, the robot vacuum is very efficient and doesn’t get stuck. It also works great on hard floors and with short-pile rug. Although it’s more durable than a Roomba 6,94, this rug is still very reliable.
Are Robot Vacuums Worth It?
A robot vacuum can be a great investment if you are short on time, or have pets who shed. The robot vacuums can also be used by pet owners. A basic robotic vacuum will keep your pets clean and tidy on a daily base.
A robot vacuum does require some amount of time and input from you. For more advanced models, you will have to make a plan and mark the places you wish them to clean. It is possible for a vacuum to get stuck or need help from you.
While robot vacuums aren’t able to do all the work of a stick, upright or canister vacuum cleaner, they can replace them. While they are helpful in cleaning up house spilled or dirty liquids, they may not be the best tool for dealing with household accidents.
Even the most technologically advanced vacuums can’t access every corner and difficult-to reach space.
These are great investments to keep you ahead of dirt and dust accumulation.
Consider the layout of your home and whether you have mostly hardwood floors or deep-pile carpeting. You will need to give a lot of input if you live in Victorian style homes or have high-pile carpeting. However, if you live in a more modern, open-flow style of home with tile or hardwood floors, a robot vacuum is a great option. It is also important to consider how much time and effort you are willing to spend cleaning the house prior to vacuuming.
One of the most affordable vacuums is available if you’re willing to take care not only picking up lamps cords but also toys, and any other items that may get caught in the brush. These robots, like our budget recommendation the Eufy 11s run in a random, “bump & run” mode and lack smart mapping. This means they will clean your entire home for an extended period of time, instead of moving from one room to the next.
But just because you’re not spending a lot of money on a smart unit doesn’t mean you’re not going to get a clean house. We found that some units clean as well as higher-priced models can be just as effective in cleaning as the more expensive ones.
If time and effort are not a priority, opt for the LiDAR connected vacuums. You will avoid the headache of cleaning up after the first setup by mapping out your house and setting up “no go zones” in-app.
The price of these models is higher, but it gives you the option to schedule cleanings, set specific rooms for vacuuming, and even use Google Assistant and Alexa voice assistants to control your vacuum.

The CR lab has seen dozens of robotic vacuums tested to determine which models are the best. CR vacuum testers compare how well each vacuum removes debris from medium-pile carpet and bare floor, how easy it is to get in tight corners, as well how efficiently it moves through different rooms and avoids common pitfalls such power cords, carpet fringe, and other obstacles. Our carpet cleaning test gave it a rating of Good and on bare flooring, an Excellent rating. Although the cleaner is not efficient (testers said that it occasionally scatters dirt), it works well and it has a safety cliff sensor which prevents it falling down stairs. The model doesn’t have WiFi connectivity, which means you cannot control it from your smartphone via an app. However, it is also not possible to hack. Eufy robotic vacuums as a group received an Excellent rating for reliability in our member survey, as well as a Very Good owner satisfaction score.
Review by CR: The i3+ IRobot Roomba earned an excellent rating in our pet hair tests due to the rubber brush roll. This model is one of the larger models and it doesn’t trip over the power cords. Navigation is top-notch and it’s very quiet. One downside: You have to purchase replacement vacuum bags for the base, but they don’t cost a lot. This manufacturer received mixed results on data security. It earned a good rating for privacy, and an excellent rating for data security. To its credit, iRobot is one of the only companies that says it will provide updates to patch security vulnerabilities and establish a vulnerability program open to security researchers. Another selling point: iRobot’s robotic vacuums earn a Very Good rating for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.
CR’s view: The Roomba Roomba 7+, the top-of-the line Roomba vacuum cleaner, cleans floors effectively and quickly collects large amounts of debris in a single sweep. Automatically emptying its trash into the dock after returning home will ensure that it runs more than any other robot vacuum before you have to get up and clean them. And because it’s smart, you can start a cleaning cycle from your phone or with voice commands to an Alexa or Google Assistant speaker. However, it is recommended that pets hair be manually removed.
It has been an outstanding performer in all CR’s tests. The vacuum passed both our pet hair and bare floors tests with Outstanding scores. Smart-mapping technology in the vacuum allows it to identify, map, adapt, and clean specific areas. And iRobot says it will replace the vacuum if, within a year of purchase, it should fail to avoid pet waste. This vacuum is easy to maneuver under and around furniture, and the navigation system is excellent. Roomba j7 falls short of receiving an Excellent rating for data security. And like all its brandmates, it earns a middling Good rating for data privacy.

Our Runner Up
Every Roborock vacuum has been tested, including the E20 and the S6 MaxV. Their navigation capabilities have improved over the years and the app is now easier and cleaner to use. You want to get the most value for money, so a midrange Roborock like our current test model of the S4 Max is the best.
Wi-Fi enabled S4 Max features I haven’t seen before on higher-end robot vacuums like problem spot detection and mapping. It’s the only robot vacuum I have found that won’t be tripped on my kitchen step. And it can last up to three hours on a single charge. The dust bin is also slightly larger than average.
Upgrade pick? Roborock recently released the S7, however I do not believe that the price is justified. It has a multidirectional rubber roller, which is not as efficient as the S4 Max’s brush for lifting dirt off our carpet. I have to follow it around afterward and pick up smallish clumps of dog hair.
