Ping S55 Irons Review

Ping S55 Irons Review

The Takeaway

The S55 might have the highest performing player iron today, if you remove sound and feeling from the review. The S55’s are aimed at golfers who can hit the sweet spot often, so sound and feel may be as important as any buying decision.

There’s not enough differences between the S55’s and the S56 irons for us to recommend an upgrade, but for golfers who absolutely need a new set, we’re confident to steer them in the S55’s direction. These irons are the most flexible and forgiving of all tour-quality golfers. They feel fantastic, even though they aren’t as great as their forged counterparts.

It’s a lot like asking golfers to identify their favourite players irons. Some like the high-tech approach, while others like a more raw driving experience. Ping went tech and created the S55, believing that the S55 would offer more benefits than the sound-and-feel benefits of a forged iron. For a company that is known for its performance it is hard to agree with them.

Performance

When I first spoke with PING about reviewing the S55, I was asked a question I had never encountered from an OEM before, “What’s your handicap?” This was a fair question; these are not irons for the average double digit handicapper. They aren’t as hard as they look. I actually came away from each of my sessions with the S55 impressed with the level of forgiveness that PING has packed into this very small blade.

My favorite aspect of forgiveness was the fact that you could hit a very thin shot yet still achieve a good trajectory. A typical blade is very heavy on the Co. G, so hitting a thin shot can be fatal. With the S55 however, the Co. G level is lower. So you can get very close shots with the S55.

Other than that, the club performs exactly as it should. The club is player-oriented and focuses on precision shot-shaping. If you have the skills, the S55 will allow you to hit any trajectory or shape that you want.

PING is a well-known company for making iron sets that are extremely playable. They were the ones who introduced perimeter weighting to the game. PING will soon release the new version of their S-series iron series, after much anticipation. PING, who are the main players in their iron lineup, has had a lot of success with S57/S56 irons in recent years. Now they plan on building upon this success with S55.

PING for the S55 Irons

Design Details:

S55 iron is an efficient, multi-material model that provides greater control and distance while also improving forgiveness and workability. These 17-4 stainless metal heads come in 3-PW and have a weighted tungsten toe to improve forgiveness. A machined face, grooves and back cavity, plus thin top lines, a compact head, and a brushed, satin-chrome finish create a confidence-inspiring design. PING’s standard CFS steel shaft, which provides control, feel and stability, is mid-high in launch.

You can control and feel it.

Ping and Taylormade Callaway, as well as other manufacturers such Taylormade Callaway, have modernized the lofts on their clubs. In the Callaway Apex Pro 16 Irons Review, players get an extra few yards with each iron. This we KNOW the average golfer definitely won’t complain about.

Ping S55 bags have a reasonable appeal. They feature a simple, milled cavity back design and just enough familiarity with their badges. The soft clicky sound of every strike is a big plus.

Another thing that I must mention is the addictive nature of these irons, or modern Ping irons.

It’s easy to fall in love with them even when you don’t like their first attempts. You keep on hitting them. It was almost as if psychologically they build your confidence shot upon shot. This I found very remarkable.

Verdict

While the S56 performs very similar, it has a slightly better distance range than the S56 and is more workable. They also have a lot of forgiveness throughout the set. Like I mentioned before, I prefer the S55’s appearance. The S55 is my favorite club from PING. Some people may find them a bit strange, even though they haven’t been forged. But that is not what bothers me. These are soft enough to feel good and that is all I care about. Set is PS950 but they are worth it. Better players get involved.
