We’ve tested pretty much every Roborock vacuum, from the humble E20 to the higher-end S6 MaxV . They have made their navigation easier over the years. You want to get the most for your money, so a midrange Roborock like our current test model of the S4 Max is best.
Wi-Fi-enabled S4 Max offers features previously only available on more expensive robot vacuums. These include mapping, virtual barriers and spot detection. It is the best robot vacuum that does not get stuck on my kitchen floor. The battery lasts up to 3 hours, which is amazing. The dust bin is also slightly larger than average.
What upgrade choice? Roborock has recently launched the S7. However, I doubt that it is worth the extra cost. It has a multidirectional rubber roller, which is not as efficient as the S4 Max’s brush for lifting dirt off our carpet. I have to follow it around afterward and pick up smallish clumps of dog hair.
The Best
We featured iRobot’s latest Roomba j7+ in our yearly Wish List . Despite the influx of competition, iRobot vacuums are effective and intuitive to use. The vacuum’s cleaning tubes are reliable and never get blocked. Also, the cleaning base tubes are smaller and have extra storage. There are no cleaning bases that have this feature, and I usually forget where the bags were stored.
Roomba’s Roomba J7+ features powerful suction as well as some of best navigational software on the market. Genius is a feature that lets you communicate with your Roomba using an app. It is claimed that smart-recharge will allow the j7+ to return to areas it left behind. It missed one corner in my 1000-square foot downstairs when it did its initial mapping. My husband realized quickly that the problem wasn’t in one place.

However they cost more than vacuums which you must push around your house. The price range for cordless vacuums is $50/PS50, while they can cost around $130/PS125. These models don’t have Wi-Fi connectivity, and are therefore not recommended for those who need room mapping. To get the mid-range models, increase your budget to $250/ PS250. For the top-of-the-range options that come loaded with smarts and really ensure you can hand over the floor cleaning completely, you’ll need to spend $849.99 / PS899.99 upwards.

For the purpose of identifying the best robotic vacuums, we tested robot vacuums from large brands, such as Shark and Dyson. We also tried models made by smaller companies like Eufy or Roborock. Each model’s dirt pickup is evaluated. We also evaluate whether it picks up fine dust, cookie crumbs and larger particles such as cereal.
The robot vacuums are evaluated on how efficiently they clean floors. They also have to be able to maneuver easily across hard and carpeted floors. Also, robot vacuums must be able learn how your home is laid out so that they can easily dispatch a cleaner to an area or rooms in a matter of seconds.
Every robot vacuum we review is judged on the ease with which it can be emptyed, its useability, and the length of time it takes between charges.
What To Consider When Buying A Robot Vacuum
When choosing the right robot vacuum cleaner, there are many things you need to consider.
As well as deciding on whether you want a robovac that just vacuums or one that mops as well, it’s also important to consider battery life, as nobody wants a robot vacuum that runs out of power halfway through cleaning your home. It’s also worth looking for vacuums that can empty its own dust bins. Robot vacuums can then be left unattended to sweep your floors.
These robot vacuums follow a systematic route across your floors. This ensures fast and efficient vacuuming. However, these tend to be more expensive than robot vacuums that employ a random route when cleaning your floors.
Smart mapping is a feature that allows you to program the robot vacuum to recognize your house’s layout so it can automatically clean areas. This is especially useful if there are teenagers that leave all their clothes scattered across the bedroom floor.
Are Robot Vacuums Worth It?
A robot vacuum can be a great investment if you are short on time, or have pets who shed. They’re particularly great for pet owners, since even if you depend on a traditional vacuum cleaner, a basic robot can stay on top of the hair, dander and litter on a daily basis, making your chores a little easier once you get around to a deep clean.
The input of a robot vacuum requires some effort and time. More advanced models require you to set up a map and define the zones of your house you’ll want them to clean or stay away from, and even the best vacuum can get stuck and need human intervention.
Although robot vacuums cannot do everything, they are not able to replace an upright vacuum. They aren’t the best tools for taking care of household accidents or heavily soiled areas, and if they end up running over anything messy (pet waste or spilled liquids) they can make things worse.
Even the best vacuums can’t access every crevice or difficult-to reach space.
However, these are solid investments for keeping dust and dirt from building up. They also make sense as part of a regular cleaning routine.
You should consider the layout and type of flooring in your home. The robot vacuum may require more of your input if the home you are using is Victorian in style or contains medium-to-high pile carpeting. If you have tile or hardwood floors and live in an open-flow home, however, then a robot vacuum may be the best option. A robot vacuum is a great option if you have a lot of time to prep the home before starting to vacuum.
You can choose one of the cheaper robot vacuums if you are willing to pick up lamp cords, toys, and other objects that could get in your way. This robot, which is our budget choice, the Eufy 11s runs in an unplanned “bump-and-run” style. It doesn’t have any intelligent mapping capabilities so it will take a while to sweep the house.
But just because you’re not spending a lot of money on a smart unit doesn’t mean you’re not going to get a clean house. Our testing revealed that there were some models that can clean just as well as more expensive options.
You don’t have to spend the time cleaning the house. Instead, you can opt for the LiDAR enabled, connected robot vacuums such as our recommendation, the iRobot Roomba j7+. These are intelligent enough to recognize and avoid obstacles. It will be easier to declutter each vacuum run by spending the extra time in the setup.
The price of these models is higher, but it gives you the option to schedule cleanings and designate rooms for vacuuming.

The carpet cleaner earned a high rating during our carpet cleaning testing and an outstanding rating on bare floors. It isn’t the fastest cleaner, but it does the job well. The cliff sensor prevents it from falling down the stairs. This model isn’t WiFi-enabled, so you can’t control it remotely from a smartphone app, but that also means it can’t be hacked. Eufy robotic vacuums as a group received an Excellent rating for reliability in our member survey, as well as a Very Good owner satisfaction score.
Commentary by CR. The i3+ Roomba iRobot Roomba gets an Excellent rating during our pet-hair test, due in large part to its rubber brush rolling. It is the largest model on our list, and does not get caught up in power cords. You will be impressed by the navigation and how quiet it is. It does have one drawback: you need to buy new vacuum bags for your base. But they’re not very expensive. This manufacturer received mixed results on data security. It earned a good rating for privacy, and an excellent rating for data security. iRobot, to its credit is the only company that promises updates to fix security flaws and create a program for security researchers. The robotic vacuums of iRobot are a very good choice for reliability prediction and customer satisfaction.
CR’s Take: This top-of the-line Roomba® i7+ vacuum cleans floors quickly and efficiently. Automatically emptying its bins into the dock after returning home means it is able to go through more cleaning cycles before needing to be emptied. And because it’s smart, you can start a cleaning cycle from your phone or with voice commands to an Alexa or Google Assistant speaker. However, our test subjects said that pet hair must be removed manually from the brush.
It is solid in our CR tests and scored Excellent results on both the pet hair and bare flooring tests. The vacuum has smart-mapping technology that allows it to learn, map, and adapt to the areas to be cleaned. iRobot guarantees that it will change the vacuum if it stops removing pet waste from its areas within a year. The vacuum slides easily under and around furniture and has excellent navigation. Roomba j7 was the only iRobot that did not earn an excellent score for data security. As with its fellow brandmates, it gets an acceptable Good rating for data security.
