Studies Find Rat Poison in Dead Eagles Across the U.S.
More Than 82 Percent of the 133 Eagles Tested had Anticoagulant Rodenticides in Their Body
A new study found rat poison in the bodies of more than 80 percent of 133 dead bald and golden eagles from across the U.S. Mark G. Ruder In the United States, the eagle is a powerful national symbol, and even though their populations are now increasing following the ban of DDT, they’re afforded protections under three federal laws . New evidence suggests that Americans might be trying to kill rodents with poison, says Ian Morse of New Scientist. This study was published in the Journal PLoS ONE. Researchers found rat poison on 82 percent the eagles that they examined.
Though the rat poison was only determined to be the definitive cause of death in four percent of the eagle deaths, the fact that the deadly chemicals were so prevalent is still cause for concern.
“This suggests that even though the greatest efforts have been made to reduce the chance of raptor diseases being exposed to these compounds, somehow they are getting exposed,” Mark Ruder from the University of Georgia, who is a lead author of New Scientist’s paper. Ruder is a research scientist studying wildlife disease and is a leading author of this paper.
Eagles (bobcats), coyotes and other predators are often exposed to poisonous rat bait. Many rat poisons now fall under the second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide category. They kill any animal that consumes them and prevent blood clotting. Molly Taft from Gizmodo says that first-generation poisons for rats worked in the same way but were much less dangerous. If a creature is unlucky enough not to have them, second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides can also last for longer.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been limiting the sales of second-generation rodenticides for commercial pest control professionals since 2011. However, it is still being used in the birds’ diets.
“It’s the ability to persist in those tissues for a long time that creates the problem,” Ruder tells Gizmodo. Ruder tells Gizmodo: “Eagles are efficient predators/scavengers so they are at greater risk of accumulating the toxin through the system. This is because the toxin can persist in those tissues for a long time.” Ruder also said that his findings showed that deadly rat toxicosis is still making its way into the wider environment despite regulatory efforts. Rudy informs Gizmodo, “we must continue to examine what routes rat poison can take into the environment and find ways to decrease that risk.”
