1. Sawyer Premium Mosquito Repellent
This Sawyer product is available in a lotion, spray or pump. It contains Picaridin which, at 20%, repels both ticks and mosquitoes. Sawyer makes claims that this product works for up to 12 hour, but the evidence suggests it can work for about 8 hours. Sawyer clearly states in his instructions that this product should be used for at least 8 hours. It won’t stop working after 12 hours. However, the effectiveness of this product decreases with age. This product is excellent for repelling mosquitoes. It’s a good choice for kids and young children older than 6 months. It doesn’t have strong odors and no DEET. Additionally, it is less greasy than DEET and effective in protecting against Zika, EEE and West Nile Virus mosquitoes. This product also works well to repel biting and chewing flies such as gnats or chiggers. We tested it with both the pump spray and continuous aerosol sprayer. It worked well in our tests. The 6 ounce, hairspray-sized sprayer bottle can be carried in a larger container if space is available. We also found it initially a bit greasy, but after a few minutes of drying and absorption it became a nice soft protective layer. This is in contrast to strong Lemon Eucalyptus and DEET smells.
It was worn by us for nearly 4 hours while we hiked through New England forests in June. The time is prime for mosquitoes and ticks. This was tested on two young children aged 6 and 8 years old. We didn’t get bites and we were not constantly bothered by the buzzing insects. It is very protective. If we continued to work into the evening, we are confident it will last as long as we do. It was applied to the entire body: legs, necks and arms. Spray it onto your face and rub it in. It was also lightly rubbed onto hair and clothing. This is another great 20% Picaridin option, with very similar effectiveness to the Sawyer product. Picaridin 20% can kill ticks and mosquitoes up to eight hours after application. They claim protection for 12 hours, just like the Sawyer product. However, we believe that 8 hours is more realistic. In our testing, we found this product to be exactly as effective as the Sawyer product. It sprayed on easily with the convenient (non aerosol) continuous sprayer, had good coverage, and protected against a ton of insects. It had the same features as the Sawyer product. There are two main reasons it is #2. It’s more difficult to locate and buy than Sawyer products and it tends to disappear from Amazon during the hot summer months, when most people need it. Second, the sprayer isn’t as evenly-misting as the Sawyer sprayer, as it tends to have some clumping/drops that come out in addition to the mist. A bit like a spray-on sunscreen. We felt it was overpriced.
Picaridin offers a great alternative to DEET. One advantage of Picaridin? It’s virtually inodorless. The only problem was that they had added fragrance. We did not enjoy it and neither did the kids. So these are some small nit-picking reasons to place this as the second best bug repellent for kids, especially considering that it is extremely effective and easy to use. This is an outstanding insect repellent and will keep you and your children safe for hours, even in the most dense swamps. To apply it, use the same method as with Sawyer. We put it on our exposed skin, including arms, legs and ankles. The product was applied to our faces by first rubbing the cream onto our fingers. The product also worked well on hair and clothing. Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus from natural sources is used in this product. The Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus has been approved by CDC as an insect repellent. This product is DEET-free and contains 30% of pmenthanediol (PMD) from lemon eucalyptus ziriodora oil. It works extremely well against both ticks and mosquitoes. Our testing revealed that this product had a very strong smell. It wasn’t bad to smell like DEET but it was strong enough to be recognizable as a lemon scent. We prefer the natural-source ingredients of this repellent to DEET. REPEL claims that it is free from a range of allergens. You should not use it close to a flame source such as a grill or campfire. While the product states that it will repel mosquitoes for eight hours, it was tested and showed it to work well in our testing.
We believe it works just as well as 15% DEET products. Although this product didn’t perform as well in our tests as Picaridin based repellents such as Natrapel and Sawyer, it was effective enough to be used for mosquitoes. Safety and effectiveness concerns
Safety. Picaridin, DEET and IR 3535 are the best tick and mosquito repellents. Other products may contain Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. This is not as effective. EWG & CDC say that each ingredient has a slightly unique safety profile. Let’s take a look at each ingredient individually. With any bug repellent, we suggest always washing it off before bedtime, and never using it for several days in a row. Negative side effects from bug spray ingredients will be multiplied by prolonged exposure. This is the same issue with even the best baby lotions , which is why we are always so careful about ingredients!
DEET Safety. This ingredient, which has been effective in repelling insects for over 60 year is still widely used. DEET is also known for its negative reputation. This comes from reports in 1980 of DEET-induced encephalopathy (severe side effects) among children. But, there’s no evidence suggesting that DEET may have caused the illnesses. In fact, research from recent years has shown no significant adverse effects when DEET is prescribed. It is important to remember that DEET can only be used in the recommended amounts. You should follow any instructions for bug sprays and not apply too much. Given DEET’s effectiveness, it is the #1 doctor recommended insect repellent for people visiting regions with mosquito- or tick-borne illnesses. DEET should be avoided in children under six months. For high-bug risk areas, a 20%-30% DEET product should be used. One application is sufficient. From 2-12 years of age, a 20-30% DEET product is suggested, with a limit of 3 applications per day. An adult and teenager can have a limit of 30-50% DEET. Applications should follow product directions.
Picaridin Safety. This synthetic compound was developed in the 1980’s, by Bayer, used extensively in Europe and Australia, and only recently introduced to the US market in 2005. DEET has been marketed to children as being more effective than DEET. It’s also less smelly. Picaridin has no safety risk compared to DEET, and Picaridin’s toxicity rates in adults or children is extremely low. Picaridin has a lower risk of causing skin and eyes irritation than DEET. It might also be an option for people with allergy. For children aged 6 and over, it is not recommended to be used.
IR3535 Safety. Another synthetic compound, Merck developed it in 1980. It is a synthetic amino acid that affects an insect’s sense of smell, making then less likely to recognize you as a tasty meal. Picaridin is more attractive because it doesn’t smell as bad as DEET. The safety profile of IR353535, like Picaridin is very good. Although it can cause mild eye irritation (avoid getting it inside your eyes), the World Health Organization has not found any long-term harmful effects to humans or the environment. It is relatively rare (versus Picaridin and DEET), and most popularly found in a line of Avon Skin-So-Soft bug repellent sprays and lotions.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus Safety. This natural alternative to tick and mosquito repellent is getting a lot attention and has been recommended by the CDC. Lemon Eucalyptus oil is obtained from the eucalyptus trees and refined to make a chemical (PMD), that repels ticks and mosquitoes. Safety data on synthetic PMD (Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus) are scarce and the product is not yet available for sale as a insect repellent. It is not that there are any signs of toxic effects. It is not because of any evidence. We suggest that young children avoid using it until further data becomes available. It is important that you note that the safety and efficacy of natural Lemon Eucalyptus Oil are not as good as Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
Effectiveness. The best mosquito repellants are not only safe, but parents also want them to be super effective for their babies and children. The question is hard because it’s difficult to compare the effectiveness and effectiveness of natural bug sprays against the effectiveness of any four CDC approved repellents (DEETe, Picaridin IR353535 or Lemon Eucalyptus Oil).
