Our Gold Metal Detector Reviews

Minelab CTX3030 Best Overall Gold Metal Detector Weight: 5.2 lbs.

The Minelab CTX-3030 gold metal detector is currently the most powerful on the market. This detector is loaded with all of the features that are important for finding gold. With its exceptional ground balancing feature, the CTX will run in nearly any terrain. Minelab’s FeCo Discrimination can be used to help identify gold targets that you should dig. This will save time and effort in digging up other metals. High sensitivity is essential when searching for gold. Small gold nuggets may be difficult to find. Also, a detector that detects deeper gold nuggets is an option.

This metal detector is great for all kinds of metal detection. The CTX-3030’s many pre-set search modes, as well as the possibility to change search coils according to your requirements, give it a great deal of versatility that puts it above other gold metal detectors. We often need to go into water for gold prospecting. You can swim up to 10ft with the CTX-3030, making it a unique gold detector. Knowing that my detector works in all weather conditions is a comfort to me, it’s reassuring.

My experience has shown me that staying out in the field for hours is the toughest part of gold-hunting. The ergonomic, fatigue-saving design on the Minelab CTX-3030 makes this impossible. In terms of ergonomics, Minelab developed a metal detector that will help keep you out in the field longer, with less fatigue.

Wireless headphones are an excellent addition. I find it irritating to get tangled in headphones when you are detecting.

It is a very powerful machine that can be used for many purposes. The average detectorist will find it to be quite light. Despite that, I will say that it might not suit detectorists with smaller statures. You might also consider the Fisher Gold Bug Garrett AT Gold, which is lighter for children, women and older detectorists (more information below).

Frequency 19 kHz Warranty 5 year limited The Fisher Gold Bug gold detector is powerful but affordable. If you are looking for an entry-level metal detector for gold prospecting, or you don’t want to make a large initial investment, the Gold Bug will be the perfect metal detector for you.

Fisher Gold Bugs come with a 5″ DD search coil that is capable of finding even the smallest gold nuggets. This search coil can offer a different hunting experience than many other metal detectors.

If you prefer a bigger search coil, there are many other options. Side note, in places where I frequently metal detect for Gold, I tend to use the largest search coil I can find because of how little garbage.

Frequency

In order to determine how well your metal detector performs under various conditions, it is important that your operating frequency be set at very low frequencies (VLF). The operating frequency of most metal detectors is the same as that supplied by the manufacturer. Some detectors come with adjustable frequencies that allow you to alter the frequency according to your requirements for prospecting trips.

A low frequency will give you the best depth, however it may not be able to pick up small nuggets of gold, which could pose a problem. While a high frequency may not provide as deep a reading, it should find small nuggets of gold that are harder to locate than those at a lower frequency. Clearly, this is a challenge when you are comparing detectors, as greater depth and sensitivity are both desirable, but they are inversely related to one another.

What is the best way to decide if you need a VLF metal detector with a lower or higher frequency? This actually depends pretty heavily on the area you are gold prospecting in. Some areas are known to have many small nuggets, whereas other areas may have larger nuggets that may be deeper in the ground. The best way to bridge between the lower and the higher frequency is to buy a multifrequency metal detector. With adjustable frequencies, you can set up the gold metal detector for the optimal combination of strengths that suits your requirements.

Steve’s guide to gold nugget detectors. Updated August 2021

Here’s a brief overview of recent events within the metal detector market. A few years ago we lost a major manufacturer in the form of Tesoro. The TesoroloboSuperTRAQ was dropped from this list. 2020 saw the passing of one true industry icon.

White’s Electronics was acquired by Garrett in October. Although it’s not known what will happen, the nugget detections of White are being removed from the list. They no longer come with a warranty. My detailed reviews provide information on White models.

Fisher F19 ($449, 19 kHz) – This detector is a later, more advanced version of the Fisher Gold Bug Pro (see below), with added features. You will find a high-quality threshold-based, all metal mode as well as dual tone discrimination. You can use the F19 to adjust your tone, and it also features ground grab, manual ground balance, as well as adjustable tone breaks, like the Gold Bug Pro. The F19 has additional features to improve the ability of your jewelry, relic or coin. These include volume control and volume adjustment, as well as separate ferrous tone volumes and an LCD backlight. They may also prove useful when gold prospecting. All compatible Gold Bug coils and those for the Teknetics G2 range can be used by the Fisher F19. There is a vast array of accessories available. This detector can be had with several stock coil options, including a 7″ x 11″ DD coil, or 5″ x 10″ DD coil. Weight of this detector with one 9V battery included is 2.6 lbs.

Steve’s Opinion – First Texas, the manufacturer of Bounty Hunter, Fisher, and Teknetics metal detectors, sells quite a few identical or near identical metal detectors under different brand names and model names. Due to oddities in their marketing scheme, some more powerful models are often available at lower prices than other less capable models. Currently the 19 kHz Gold Bug name carries a premium price, while other identical or more capable models sold under other names can often be had for less money. It is also the case for the Fisher F19 19-kHz models, and the Bounty hunter Time ranger Pro identical model. This is the bottom line. If you can find a Fisher F19 with 5″ x 10″ elliptical coil for under $500 at a legitimate dealer (see counterfeit note above) it is easily my current recommendation for an extremely capable entry level VLF nugget detector with general purpose capabilities. I recommend this detector over the Fisher Gold Bug and Gold Bug Pro models below, not only because of the extra capability, but because it can be had stock with the 5″ x 10″ DD coil, the best general nugget hunting coil for the FT 19 kHz series. The accessory coil can only be used on Gold Bug models. This increases their out-of pocket costs. The Minelab X-Terra 705 is $50 cheaper and offers a deluxe set that includes additional jewelry-detecting and coin-sensing features.

Fisher Gold Bug (19 kHz, 449$) – This model has full LCD target recognition and runs much hotter than the Gold Bug that was made in 1980. Because of its target ID, the Gold Bug is great for hunting nuggets. It also appeals to jewelry and relic hunters. To increase the detection of small amounts of gold, this model usually comes standard with a 5″ DD coil. But other coil options can be purchased. The Gold Bug features an easy to use ground balance “Grab” function. This detector should not be confused with the Gold Bug Pro, which is almost identical and adds manual ground balance controls. 2.25 lb including the single 9V battery. For the Gold Bug, there are many accessories coils.

Steve’s Opinion. Originally, this 19 kHz basic model was attractive for its affordable price. The Fisher F19 is now available with an improved coil and much more power for half the price. Pass.

Minelab X Terra 705 gold ($499.3, 7.5, 18.75 kHz). – This detector is unique in its design. The standard unit comes with a 5″ x 10″ DD 18.75 kHz coil. You can also purchase accessory coils at 3. kHz or 7.55 KHz. Simply by changing your coil you can alter the frequency. The X-Terra 705 is equipped with a wide range of operating modes and features that make it ideal for metal detecting. Weight including four AA batteries 2.9 lbs. The X-Terra705 can be equipped with over ten accessory coils (Minelab, Coiltek).

Steve’s opinion – I love the X-Terra705. It offers a strong all-metal Prospecting Mode. The X-Terra 705 has both ground tracking capabilities and manual ground balance. This is a great feature that I really like. The X-Terra 705’s lightweight and compact design appeals to me. Its many other features, however, are what sets the X-Terra 705 apart. The X-Terra 705 is a smart choice for anyone who needs all the jewelry and coin detecting options that urban detectorists require. The detector is more discriminating and has tone options than much higher-end models. This is the machine for somebody who really wants all the features a top end detector offers and still have a good prospecting detector. 2021 Note: This detector has an internet price that is $499 lower than the Fisher F19’s $699. The X-Terra is $50 cheaper and offers a lot more options for coin and jewelry hunters, as well as relic hunters, in particular when it comes to target tone id options.

Nokta/Makro Gold Racer (509, 56 KHz) – This Gold Racer was based on the Racer original model that was released in February 2015. While the 56kHz Gold Racer was unique in that it had all the standard features of a coin or relic detector, yet is running at a high nugget-detecting frequency, it remains a rare model. This makes the detector more useful than a specific nugget detector. Gold Racer includes a 10-inch x 5-inch DD coil, and three additional coils. Weighing 3.0lbs, which includes four AA Batteries is included in the total.

Steve’s Opinion – I like the Nokta/Makro Gold Racer as it really is something new instead of just another mid-frequency do-it-all detector. As well as its lightweight, compact design, I love the high frequency sensitivity of small gold nuggets. The machine can handle a high frequency (large) coil (15″ x 13 1/2″ DD) and also has a concentric option. It also offers full discrimination capabilities that you will not find on any high frequency nugget detectors. This detector is well worth your attention, particularly if large coil options are important.

Review & Buyer’s Guide: Best Metal Detectors for Gold Nuggets & Flakes (2021).

Do you want to hunt for gold nuggets? You should get a metal detector with the ability to withstand harsh terrain conditions. This article lists eight best gold detectors to assist you in making the right decision for you and your money.

The hobby of gold prospecting using a metal detector has become a favorite one.

Apart from the potential for lucrative returns, gold prospecting is great fun. Many prospectors find that they have to spend most of their spare time on it.

The right detector can make all the difference in whether you find coins, relics or gold. Most detectors cannot handle gold-rich environments, so you need to be careful when choosing which model.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a gold-detecting device. With so many options on the market, how do you decide which one to buy?

A buyer’s manual is included further down, but these are key considerations when you choose a metal detector to hunt for gold.

Your budget is important. Gold detectors can become expensive, especially when you are looking for a pulse detection model. That doesn’t mean you need to spend $8000 on a high-end Minelab though – and in some environments a cheaper model may be nearly as effective. Here are my top picks sorted by price.

Choose High-Frequency or Pulse Induction Technology. These metal detectors have both advantages and disadvantages. The choice of which type to use depends on your needs. However, low frequency VLF devices (15kHz) are best avoided because they do not have the necessary sensitivity for small gold nuggets.

The Detector Has the Ability to Handle Mineralization. Gold is commonly found in soil that has high levels mineralization. It can be a problem for detectors with regular detections as it causes a lot too much chatter. You should be able either to ignore this or filter it out with your gold detector.

Buy a Detector with Manual Ground Balance. This is useful for hunting in difficult locations.

What’s the Best Gold Nugget Detector?

Garrett ATX is our preferred choice because of its advanced nugget detection capabilities. It is an excellent choice regardless of whether you are looking for coins, gold nuggets, jewelry or other relics.

Which metal detector can detect gold?

Do Metal Detectors Have the Ability to Locate Gold? In terms of gold-hunting detections, there are two types: very low frequency detectors (VLF), or pulse induction detectors (PI). VLF detectors are designed for finding gold and have a higher operating frequency to provide greater sensitivity to tiny gold nuggets.
