Randall Makes Knives A Florida young outdoorsman called Walter Doane Randall saw the hull of a boat being scraped using an odd-looking hunting blade. The knife was sold immediately by Randall, who tracked down William Scagel (a Michigander eccentric) and inquired about how to make knives. Scagel shared his knowledge with him. The stainless-steel dome nuts that used to secure the handle have been replaced with one that is flush with the buttcap.
Randall’s edge will never be lost forever. Bo decided it was better to make something easily re-sharpened. If you know how, you can get a razor-like edge on a Randall. One of the first ones I purchased, 1957, nearly tore my finger just five minutes after I got it home. My first love was a deep and passionate one.

Spyderco was the first to create an affordable hunting knife. They also produce impressive fixed blades such as the Bow River. This is a straight-forward trailing point, skinner style blade that is long enough to do double duty as a slicer on the processing table as well. Flat-ground, 8Cr13MoV stainless, will hold an edge well. It can be sharpened easily and has good resistance to corrosion. The knife’s G10 handle, which is contoured in black and white, offers a pleasant surprise at this price. Spyderco was also very pleased with the finished sheath. A leather pouch-style style scabbard, it securely holds Bow River. There are two things I have to complain about: the blade needs to be more sharpened and there should be some texture in the G10 grip handle. This will help with gripping the knife better, as the finish is too smooth. That being said, the Bow River punches above its price point. MSRP: $60.00. Browning Primal Folder, Medium – Classic Folding Hunting Knife. If you believe that the finest hunting knives should be carried in an EDC fashion, this is the knife for you. While the features list looks like a basic pocket clip folder with few extras, they are still useful for hunters. Primal Folders are made of proven materials, such as polymer and stainless steel. This allows you to save money on your knife. A narrow, shallow drop point made from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel has ambidextrous thumbstuds for opening and is well suited for EDC or hunting. Steel liners give the linings a lovely heft, as well as added strength. Liner are made of a polymer layer that is covered with rubber materials that provide excellent grip. The downside? It can be difficult to reach the Primal Folder from your pocket. You should be prepared for your pocket to become inside-out if the knife is removed too quickly. No-frills Hunting Knife Best I was so impressed by the EDC pocket knife Giant Mouse sent me that I wanted to test out their fixed blades as a hunting knife. They’re unfortunately no longer in stock. However, it shouldn’t surprise considering their features and the cost.
The GMF2 is an old-school style, full tang fixed blade with profiled green canvas micarta scales attached to the side with fasteners and spacers. This is a simple way to put together a sturdy, solid fixed blade. The Bohler N690 Cobalt Steel blade is a versatile tool that can be used as a hunting or field knife. You can use the blade for many purposes, including a skinner, gutting and processing. The sheath, which is an old-school style leather pouch with an integrated belt loop, follows the same pattern. Gerber’s Randy Newber EBS replaceable knife kit is another entry in the changing-a-blade category. These blades can be taken care of like other knives and should not be thrown out. EBS is more of a toolkit than a knife. When not in use, the blades ride in a box cleverly designed to prevent rattling, and the handle nests into the back of the case. The entire setup can be stored in your backpack and the handle and three blades will all fit into it. You can’t strap it to your belt or put it in your pocket. This hunting knife set is meant for taking apart critters or for using around camp when rapid access isn’t necessary. There are three blades made of 440C stainless steel that can be used in the EBS. One is a serrated one, while the two other blades have a drop point. Each blade measures about an inch more than the others. Accessing the blades in the case is easy and installing the blades in the handle is simple once you stop over thinking it. Best compact hunting knife price The BIWA, while one of the smallest, is also the most svelte. This is a fixed blade harkening back to the “trout and bird” knife days when people occasionally kept trout without being called heathens. The BIWA is a full-tang, lightweight, 8Cr13MoV stainless knife with a slim profile. It also features a G10 scale and a nicely contoured handle. It weighs only 1.6 ounces which makes it ideal for backcountry hunting. Although it is not intended for use in survival knife situations, the 3 inch blade will handle all hunting tasks. The hard plastic, molded sheath holds the BIWA securely and it even comes with an optional belt loop that can be attached to the sheath if desired. The combination knife set includes two fixed-blade full-tang knives. Each comes equipped with a non-slip rubberized TPR handle in safety orange. While the larger knife is used for skinning/guthook tasks, the smaller knife is suitable to be used as a drop-point and can also be used for caping. The 8Cr14MoV steel is heat-treated to 57Hrc for both blades. With your middle fingers curled around the narrow handle, the “beak”, or duck’s head design, slips between your pinky-ring finger. This is a difficult thing to master, but the controls are easy and it feels good. Although it would have been nice to see the “beak” less prominent, that is a minor issue. Outdoor Edge makes a handy pouch sheath for the knife, which is lined with a safety insert. Although this handle design might not suit everyone, it is worth trying to determine if it suits you. Benchmade Meatcrafter, the best butchering and processing knife, was it worth our time to add it to our top 10 list of hunting knives? It’s true. Right. That’s where the real work begins. The final cut is what makes the meal. This is not your typical backcountry survival fixed blade. This knife is not intended to be. This boning knife has all the necessary qualities to cut, debone and trim primal meats. This 6-inch blade, made of a Benchmade-specific steel and powdered metallic technology CMP154, is extremely thin and flexible. There are many things to consider when processing meat. It’s not easy to process meats. The handle is made out of Santoprene (a rubber-like substance) that has been over-molded. This allows for a strong grip even in wet and bloody hands. The Meatcrafter comes with an oversized Boltaron sheath that is rugged enough to carry on your back. You will find this knife useful in your kitchen, camp or shop where you prepare and cook meat. Gut-hooks do not appeal to me. I prefer a knife that is well-handled for opening the cavity. That’s okay if it is your choice. This bag is not mine.
