What is the best all-around knife? The Randall Model 3 is the best all-around knife.

Randall Model 3 Hunter price is $415 with the stacked-leather shoulder handle. Randall Makes Knives A Florida young outdoorsman called Walter Doane Randall saw the hull of a boat being scraped using an odd-looking hunting blade. The knife was sold immediately by Randall, who tracked down William Scagel (a Michigander eccentric) and inquired about how to make knives. Scagel shared his knowledge with him. In 1937, Randall produced his first knife. Randall Made Knives in Orlando has never been able meet its orders after more than 82 year and thousands and thousands.

Randall makes a variety of designs. However, the Model 3 is the most well-known and popular. It’s one of the most sought-after knives in the entire world. It is the model that inspired every custom smith, whether they copied it or renamed it.

Aside from its fit and finish, which are infinitely better than they used to be, the Model 3 has changed very little over the years. Randall used automobile leaf springs as blades at first, but they quickly switched to Swedish-made 01 steel. Although the stacked leather handle remains standard, there are many options. The stainless-steel dome nuts that used to secure the handle have been replaced with one that is flush with the buttcap.

Randall’s edge will never be lost forever. Bo decided it was better to make something easily re-sharpened. If you know how, you can get a razor-like edge on a Randall. One of the first ones I purchased, 1957, nearly tore my finger just five minutes after I got it home. My first love was a deep and passionate one.

Spyderco Bow River Bb46G

Spyderco was the first to create an affordable hunting knife. They also produce impressive fixed blades such as the Bow River. This is a straight-forward trailing point, skinner style blade that is long enough to do double duty as a slicer on the processing table as well. Flat-ground, 8Cr13MoV stainless, will hold an edge well. It can be sharpened easily and has good resistance to corrosion. The knife’s G10 handle, which is contoured in black and white, offers a pleasant surprise at this price. Spyderco was also very pleased with the finished sheath. A leather pouch-style style scabbard, it securely holds Bow River. There are two things I have to complain about: the blade needs to be more sharpened and there should be some texture in the G10 grip handle. This will help with gripping the knife better, as the finish is too smooth. That being said, the Bow River punches above its price point. MSRP: $60.00. Blade length 4.36 inches. ; Blade thickness of 0.10 inch. ; Overall Length 8.14in. ; Weight 3.8 oz.

Hunting knife with replaceable blade:

Cold Steel Click -N-Cut

best hunting knife

Cold Steel Click N-Cut

It seems that replaceable blade hunting knives have become increasingly popular. It could be the availability of different types or the flexibility to change out a dull blade for a razor-sharp one. This knife category will not die, no matter what. Some of the most respected brands in the industry are creating blades within this genre. Cold Steel offers a utilitarian, interesting take on the concept. Click-N-Cut, a design that doesn’t fold with a protective orange handle made of polymer and three different blade styles. These knives are not intended to be used as a scalpel or utility blade. The Click-N-Cut includes a classic fine-edge clip, a gut hook knife and a utility-style, serrated blade. You can use the utility-style serrated blade for tough tasks, saving your gut hook and clip points for other hunting-specific tasks, such as skinning large-game game animals. You will love the blade changing mechanism. It works like a lockback knife. You simply press the lever and then pull out the blade from the handle. Turn the handle in reverse to reinstall. Click-N-Cut has a molded, hard plastic sheath which holds two additional blades. While it may seem a little short, it keeps the entire package light and compact. MSRP is $31.95 Specs (knife only): Total length: 6.5 in; Blade length: 2.5 in. 1.25mm blade thickness; 2 oz weight

The Best Folding Hunting Knife

Browning Primal Folder Medium

Browning Primal Folder Medium

Browning Primal Folder, Medium – Classic Folding Hunting Knife. If you believe that the finest hunting knives should be carried in an EDC fashion, this is the knife for you. While the features list looks like a basic pocket clip folder with few extras, they are still useful for hunters. Primal Folders are made of proven materials, such as polymer and stainless steel. This allows you to save money on your knife. A narrow, shallow drop point made from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel has ambidextrous thumbstuds for opening and is well suited for EDC or hunting. GIANTMOUSE GMF2

best hunting knife

Giantmouse Mf2

No-frills Hunting Knife Best I was so impressed by the EDC pocket knife Giant Mouse sent me that I wanted to test out their fixed blades as a hunting knife. They’re unfortunately no longer in stock. However, it shouldn’t surprise considering their features and the cost.

The GMF2 is an old-school style, full tang fixed blade with profiled green canvas micarta scales attached to the side with fasteners and spacers. This is a simple way to put together a sturdy, solid fixed blade. The Bohler N690 Cobalt Steel blade is a versatile tool that can be used as a hunting or field knife. You can use the blade for many purposes, including a skinner, gutting and processing. The sheath, which is an old-school style leather pouch with an integrated belt loop, follows the same pattern. This knife’s MSRP was $195, so it is no surprise that this knife sold out when this article was published. This is okay. The MSRP for this product is $195. Specs: Blade length 3.62 in. Blade thickness 0.157 inches. ; Total length 8.12 in. ; Weight 4.1 oz.

Best Hunting Knife With Replaceable Blade Kit:

Gerber Randy Newberg EBS

Gerber Randy Newberg Ebs

Gerber’s Randy Newber EBS replaceable knife kit is another entry in the changing-a-blade category. These blades can be taken care of like other knives and should not be thrown out. EBS is more of a toolkit than a knife. When not in use, the blades ride in a box cleverly designed to prevent rattling, and the handle nests into the back of the case. The entire setup can be stored in your backpack and the handle and three blades will all fit into it. You can’t strap it to your belt or put it in your pocket. This hunting knife set is meant for taking apart critters or for using around camp when rapid access isn’t necessary. There are three blades made of 440C stainless steel that can be used in the EBS. One is a serrated one, while the two other blades have a drop point. Each blade measures about an inch more than the others. Accessing the blades in the case is easy and installing the blades in the handle is simple once you stop over thinking it. Although the handle is made out of rigid polymer, it has a rubber coating that makes it comfortable. Gerber hopes to offer other types of blades, including the gut hook and possibly the “zipper”. Price: $60.00 MSRP. Specifications: Blade length 3.25-4.25 inches. ; Overall length 9.3 in. ; Weight 4 1/8 oz.

CRKT BIWA

best hunting knife

Crkt Biwa

Best compact hunting knife price The BIWA, while one of the smallest, is also the most svelte. This is a fixed blade harkening back to the “trout and bird” knife days when people occasionally kept trout without being called heathens. The BIWA is a full-tang, lightweight, 8Cr13MoV stainless knife with a slim profile. It also features a G10 scale and a nicely contoured handle. It weighs only 1.6 ounces which makes it ideal for backcountry hunting. Although it is not intended for use in survival knife situations, the 3 inch blade will handle all hunting tasks. The hard plastic, molded sheath holds the BIWA securely and it even comes with an optional belt loop that can be attached to the sheath if desired. Other than an included lanyard that’s too small to actually get over your hand, this is a great little knife. MSRP is $49.99. Specs: Blade length 3.02 in. ; Blade thickness 0.11 in. Overall length 6.63 in. ; Weight 2 oz. (with sheath); The Best Duck’s Head Knife

Outdoor Edge: Duck Duo Outdoor Edge: Duck Duo

Best Duck Head Knife

No, these are not duck hunting knives, they’re blades for big game with a “duck’s head” profile at the back of the handle.

The combination knife set includes two fixed-blade full-tang knives. Each comes equipped with a non-slip rubberized TPR handle in safety orange. While the larger knife is used for skinning/guthook tasks, the smaller knife is suitable to be used as a drop-point and can also be used for caping. The 8Cr14MoV steel is heat-treated to 57Hrc for both blades. With your middle fingers curled around the narrow handle, the “beak”, or duck’s head design, slips between your pinky-ring finger. This is a difficult thing to master, but the controls are easy and it feels good. Although it would have been nice to see the “beak” less prominent, that is a minor issue. Outdoor Edge makes a handy pouch sheath for the knife, which is lined with a safety insert. Although this handle design might not suit everyone, it is worth trying to determine if it suits you. The MSRP for this handle is $54.96. Gut Hook Blade Width: 3.7 In. Drop point blade length 3.2in. Blade Thickness 0.11 in. Gut Hook Blade overall length 7.2 inches, Drop Point Blade overall length 6.8 inches Total weight 5 3/8 oz

Benchmade Meatcrafter

Benchmade Meatcrafter

Benchmade Meatcrafter, the best butchering and processing knife, was it worth our time to add it to our top 10 list of hunting knives? It’s true. Right. That’s where the real work begins. The final cut is what makes the meal. This is not your typical backcountry survival fixed blade. This knife is not intended to be. This boning knife has all the necessary qualities to cut, debone and trim primal meats. This 6-inch blade, made of a Benchmade-specific steel and powdered metallic technology CMP154, is extremely thin and flexible. There are many things to consider when processing meat. It’s not easy to process meats. The handle is made out of Santoprene (a rubber-like substance) that has been over-molded. This allows for a strong grip even in wet and bloody hands. The Meatcrafter comes with an oversized Boltaron sheath that is rugged enough to carry on your back. You will find this knife useful in your kitchen, camp or shop where you prepare and cook meat. The MSRP for this knife is $160. Specs: Blade length 6.08 in. ; Blade thickness 0.09in. ; Overall length 11.06in. ; Weight 3.24 oz.

The Best Backpacks For Big-Game Hunting

The best hunting backpacks were tested by us. These hunting packs are the best.

Before I go into details about the knives, let me tell you a bit more about myself. They’re also heavier.

Gut-hooks do not appeal to me. I prefer a knife that is well-handled for opening the cavity. That’s okay if it is your choice. This bag is not mine.

Finally, I prefer fixed-blade knives in general for hunting. Fixed-blade knives are better for hunting because they allow you to easily swing into survival and bushcraft modes. That said, folding knives can serve you well and I do include some here.

Here are links for knives that can be purchased at an incredible discount online. Thank you for your interest in hunting.

Editor’s Note: The article was written for the first time in 2015. Updated to reflect the addition of a few more models and updated prices for Fall 2021.

Diamondblade Pinnacle 1

DiamondBlade utilizes an innovative friction-forging technique that creates some of most durable D2 high-carbon stainless steel on the marketplace. They hold an edge for very long periods of time.

While these come with a hefty price ($299 for this one), the Pinnacle 1 is definitely one of the best hunting knives on the market.

The handcrafted handle includes handset mosaic pins. This 2.55-inch blade features a large belly that allows for easy skinning, and shallow cut for field processing.

The blade spine’s sharp jimping ensures a firm grip as well as a variety of holding methods. Overall, it’s close to the ideal hunting knife if your wallet can handle the high price tag.

Here are 13 of the Best Hunting Knives in 2021

Knives share two common features: the handle and blade. However, knives can become very customized depending on what their purpose is. So-called camp or survival knives, for example, have large blades that can be used to cut through most outdoor tasks. They are often more comfortable to be carried in your pocket for everyday use or as flippers.

As a general rule, hunt knives have blades approximately 3.5″ to 4.5″. It is possible for the blade to become more difficult or shorter. Hunting knife handles can be up to 4 inches long and feature a grippy texture. This is great for dealing with mess while processing the game. Other types of knives have similar blade material, such as the D2, CPM and M4 steels. Modern steels can be easily sharpened, and they can keep their edge for long enough to withstand a hunting expedition.

There are many hunting knives available. You don’t need to look far to find one that suits your needs. Here are the top hunting knives of this year.

Buck 656 Pro Pursuit Pro. The new Buck 656 Pro design comes from industry veteran Buck Knives. Premium S35VN S35VN steel is used to ensure that the knife’s edge stays sharp and lasts for a long time. The high-visibility orange handle is a key characteristic of this knife. Hunts are not always over in daylight hours. This makes it easy to see your knife and use it after dark.

Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter Oregon’s Benchmade introduced the Hidden Canyon Hunter in 2020. It is designed to allow multi-species versatility and has a small blade with 6.42″ overall length. This, coupled with the deep drop-point, makes it easy to process anything from big game to upland birds. Benchmade’s SelectEdge14° blade angle makes for razor-sharp edges.

The CRKT Homefront Folding Knives have received mixed reviews from the hunting community. The knives are small and light, yet they have a tendency to get gunked up during game processing. The Homefront Hunter from CRKT is a very worthy attempt to solve this issue. The included Field Strip technology makes it easy to disassemble (and reassemble) the knife without tools.

Cold Steel Finn Hawk. Cold Steel’s newer version of the Finn Hawk design is from Cold Steel. With a blade made of easy-sharpening German 4116 stainless steel, it can handle whatever processing tasks you need it to. The best thing about the knife is its simplicity. This knife is simple and has no unnecessary bells or whistles. It provides the tough dependability that you require in the field.
