All the canister vacuums in Consumer Reports’ tests do a terrific job cleaning bare floors, and some are very good at cleaning carpet. The design of canister vacuums is what makes them stand out. They are easier than upright vacuums to maneuver because the weight of the canister and powerhead is evenly distributed. This is ideal for those who live on multiple floors.
Frank Rizzi, a senior CR technician and vacuum tester, says canisters provide a benefit for cleaning staircases because they don’t need to be lifted. Canisters can also be easier to use than an upright. However, this is not something everyone understands. A small percentage of the vacuum market’s canister market makes up about 2 percent. CR’s take: Read on if you are looking for a canister that performs well on carpet. It’s not the one you see. But if you have uncarpeted floors, the Dyson Ball Multi-Floor is worth a look, as it earns an Excellent score on that test. It emits clean particles so the dirt and debris will stay in the vacuum after you have finished cleaning. You can attach all attachments to it, as the vacuum works quietly. However, it’s not very effective in removing pet hair. Based on our survey data, Dyson canisters score middling in terms of both predictability and satisfaction with owners.
Our verdict: According to CR, while the Dyson Big Ball Multi-Floor was as effective as its counterpart above in tests, we found that it does not have an on/off option for the brush roller. By switching the brush roll off, you can avoid sprinkling dirt on your bare floor. Although it’s not the best at cleaning carpet, it earns an excellent rating for clean bare floors. The unit is quiet, and it has a good rating to remove pet hair.
