Reading to Your Baby Age-by-Age
The way you read with your baby may change as they age.
Infants (0-3 Months). Your infant will reach the newborn stage between months 0-3. They are rapidly growing and adapting to the new world. They can develop their vision by reading, so boards books in high contrast colors like red, white, and black will be stimulating for them. Read 1-2 books daily while your baby is awake. Allow your baby to view the photos.
4-6 Months: During this stage, your baby will be more alert and attuned to the world around them. They will interact more than they did in their newborn phase and be more familiar with the routines and everyday activities of your household. This is my favourite stage! Reading will become a much more significant part of your baby’s day. Children love vivid colors, bright photos and reading becomes more meaningful. This stage is the best time to start short boards books, with only 1-2 sentences per pages. They will become fascinated by the world and be curious about what you have to offer. They can have fun with tactile books such as Indestructibles, board books, or sensory books.
7-9 months: This stage is when your baby will have more mobility and may be interested in reading along with you. It is the perfect time to introduce picture books about animals and colors. Babies also love to look at faces, so this is the perfect age to read picture books with pictures of babies. You may find that your baby is unable to remain still so it’s best to keep them entertained throughout the day.
10–12 Months: Your baby will be more interested in what you’re reading as they get closer to their first birthday. Although your baby might enjoy moving around and being wiggle-wormy, they can be engaged in reading as long as you have a good attention span. At this age, I love to get some books with longer words and alphabets.
I love to read beyond the reading ability of my children, and I’d read anything I found to my baby as soon as I was 3 months.
