Why You Need to Trust Us

Our advice is based mostly on two big fact-finding projects we conducted to collect feedback from people who use refrigerators and then quantify and analyze that feedback. For this guide, although we did no actual testing on refrigerators, it is clear that our thorough research led to important trends which we could not have identified if we only had the opportunity to test them.

Our first major research project was a survey of Wirecutter readers, with more than 5,000 completed responses. The survey provided solid data about overall satisfaction, door type, brand, and refrigerator functionality. It also gave information on refrigerator reliability and the features that made people most happy.

This was not a representative survey. Out of the dozens, we only collected statistically relevant data for seven to eight brands. But we’re confident that the survey results point toward some broader truths about the category, particularly among the best-selling styles and brands. Wirecutter user researcher Raquel Hayas was instrumental in completing the survey. She also crunched the numbers into meaningful figures. The other major source of information was an analysis of 28,000 customer reviews on Home Depot’s site, across 34 different refrigerator models from all the major brands and spanning door types and prices, conducted with the aid of an artificial-intelligence-driven tool called FindOurView . Even though this analysis covered only a few fridges out of hundreds, it was able to provide a great deal of information on the most important features and the areas that particular models excel at. The platform allowed us to quickly identify which LG refrigerators were most susceptible to cooling system problems. We also read a slew of other refrigerator reviews, info about reliability, and guides on how to pick and install fridges. For previous versions of this guide, we also spoke to several industry experts, including brand representatives, dealers, and repair technicians.

Let’s be clear, we have not done our own refrigerator testing. This is mainly due to logistics and pandemic protocol, as well as because it’s impossible to objectively test the refrigerators with hands-on usage. The majority of refrigerators mentioned in this guide have been touched at the appliance showrooms. We have loosened the shelves and pulled on the handles.

Unfortunately, the guide may not have all the answers. This guide doesn’t cover all the topics. We will continue to explore some of the topics further in future. We think that our research can assist many people in finding a great fridge.

Liam McCabe is a Senior Staff Writer and has been writing about home appliances since 2011, when he was a part of Reviewed. He has also contributed to versions of the Wirecutter Guide since 2014.

Why we don’t have refrigerator “picks”

We don’t have “official” recommendations for specific refrigerator models. We would highlight the top refrigerators that we believe will make people happy. Earlier versions of this guide took that approach, but it never felt like the optimal way to tackle the topic, so we’re trying something different these days.

We still recommend brands and styles we found interesting in our research. However, we also link to specific models. Wirecutter may earn commissions if users make a purchase via those links. We aren’t calling any model a pick or the best at this time. This is because it feels right for us. There are many refrigerator sizes and shapes, so it wouldn’t be easy to create a list that is representative of all the “picks”. We tried to avoid this problem in older editions of this guide by focusing on the top-selling sizes and types. However, readers complained that they couldn’t find those refrigerators, and were left feeling confused or out of touch. You can get a perspective here: Home Depot’s 10 top-selling models had three widths, four styles of doors, three types of finishes and many heights.

This is also subjective and people will come up with different conclusions regarding all aspects of the fridge. For example, door ice versus counter depth, standard-depth versus regular-depth, french-door versus side by-side. The performance metrics that are useful in determining good or bad fridges is not available. There is not enough data to provide reliable predictions about longevity and reliability.

The guide will help you to choose a fridge. You could choose to buy one of these models or the filtered search function that is available on the website of a retailer: Lowe’s Home Depot, Best Buy and Lowe’s.

The Tests

If you have ever lived in the real world, then chances are that appliances only work well in specific temperatures. A number of mechanical and electronic parts work in perfect harmony together to make an appliance function well. This can cause problems in certain areas, such as in extreme hot or cold weather.

Particularly, refrigerators can be extremely sensitive to air quality. Refrigerators cool the air by drawing in it and cooling it until it reaches a cold temperature (usually 37°F). This is enough to freeze food and stop bacteria growth. Hot weather causes the cooling coils to have to work harder. When it is cold, your fridge will not work properly. If you have another fridge, it may be that you notice that its temperature isn’t as cool as your fridge.

To mitigate these possible temperature effects, we test each refrigerator in a special lab that conditions the air to a temperature of 72degF +/- 5degF, and a relative humidity of 50% RH +/- 15% RH (basically, room temperature). So each refrigerator can perform its best and isn’t inadvertently punished for having to handle colder or hotter air than the others.

We put every refrigerator through its paces over the course a week. We fill the refrigerator with water ballast, since fridges work better in a smaller space. Then we take measurements of the temperature, humidity, time to freeze, space used, and energy consumption.

* Temperature We recommend that the refrigerator and freezer be kept at 37 and 0 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. If fridge temperatures exceed 37 degrees F, bacteria growth can be a concern. 40 degreeF marks the beginning of the “danger zone”. Frozen food should not be kept at temperatures higher than 0degF. Once we set each fridge to those temperatures, we collect temperature data throughout the week’s testing that tells us not only how close the temperature in the fridge and freezer are to 37degF and 0degF, respectively, but how close the air temperature stayed to those ideal values.

* Humidity Gains In this test, we concentrate on the crisper inside your fridge. Add water to make a foam ball of flowers. Then, record the amount of water that evaporates each day. Because your leafy greens can dry quickly if they are too dry, humidity loss rates are very important. You can risk your fruit rotting if it is too humid. The best fridges are those that have the ability to maintain a healthy balance between both extremes.

* Freezing Times Once the fridge has been connected to the power supply, it is measured how long the freezer takes to cool from room temperature down to 32degF. (The freezing point of water). This is a good measure of how quickly your fridge and freezer can cool down food or beverages that have just been placed inside the refrigerator.
